Assessing the connectivity of Canadian protected areas

Aichi Target 11 includes an objective of establishing well-connected systems of protected areas. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity is currently assessing progress towards that objective using a metric that considers only the size and proximity of protected areas to one another, ignoring variation in the quality of the intervening landscape. We are considering several variants of an alternative metric for measuring the connectivity of protected areas that accounts for variation in the intervening landscape. We are investigating the sensitivity of this metric to assumptions about species’ dispersal and the land cover data used to define habitat quality and connectivity.
